Change of Plans

Femke Gyselinck / GRIP & Platform-K

2023
'Change of Plans' is a duet between piano and sax and between dance and music.

Together with Zanne Boon and Oskar Stalpaert (two dancers from the inclusive dance company Platform-K), choreographer Femke Gyselinck walks the bumpy field of tension between choreography as a series of arrangements (or plans) and how those plans then come to life. They find that their plans are immediately thrown into disarray as soon as you dance together on a stage with an irregular design and erratic height differences.

The title of the performance refers to some lines from ‘My Future’, a song by Billie Eilish in which she looks back on the past while also looking forward with a sense of hope to the future. Femke Gyselinck didn’t call on Billie Eilish, but on musicians Hendrik Lasure (piano, keyboard) and Adia Vanheerentals (sax) to compose an original score for the show and perform it live.

Together, the five performers seek playful answers to the question raised by the title. How do you change a dance plan? Change of Plans lets you experience how exciting it is to watch dancers who have to keep adjusting their plans to one another. Not an act of sabotage, but an invitation between three dancers who each in their own way handle the given choreography very differently.

PRESS

‘Every time again, (Femke Gyselinck) turns the grammar of dance language on its head. (...) Gyselinck succeeds with verve in levelling out the difference between dancers with and without disabilities. It is absolutely no longer an issue, all focus is on the dance' - Charlotte De Somviele in De Standaard.

‘The live music by pianist Hendrik Lasure (...) and saxophonist Adia Vanheerentals is a huge added value, as are the colourful costumes. So is the idea that the dancers' limitations are relative - because together, this trio feels especially unrestrictedly graceful.’ - Magali De Grande in Het Nieuwsblad

‘The real delight only erupts towards the end of the performance, but the slow build-up to it is well worth the sitting.’ - Mia Vaerman for pzazz

‘Above all, you see three people - one exuberant, the other sensitive and the third reasoned - depicting the ups and downs in a life with the oh-so-driving help of the two master musicians.’ - Els Van Steenberge in Focus Knack
