TURNING BURNING was created in 2016 as part of the Unknown Pleasures program, where five guest choreographers presented a work without signing it.
This anonymity gave Jan Martens the freedom and space to create a piece for a ballet for the first time; but also the opportunity to give free rein to his passion for the motif of repetition and minimalism on a large ensemble scale, while connecting this work to certain emblematic figures of the postmodern and minimalist movements, such as Lucinda Childs and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

After researching jumping in his 2014 show THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER (2014), for TURNING BURNING he focused on rotation, a movement closely linked to ballet.
