DIALOGUE: BIS + LA BETE 2012-2013

BIS © Anna van Kooij
DIALOGUE is a double bill in which two solos, BIS with Truus Bronkhorst and LA BETE with Joke Emmers, are shown together. Arranged as two solos that mirror each other, Jan Martens’ DIALOGUE lets the bodies and voices of Truus and Joke resonate in one another, revealing the beauty of unconventional bodies and personalities.
BIS is a solo for and with Truus Bronkhorst, a dancer and choreographer who reigned supreme in the Netherlands in the 1980s and 1990s. It is a performance about starting over, about keeping going and not giving up. It is a raw performance, a mesmerizing portrait in which Truus gets to grips with her demons. It is a work about a strong, expressive and lonely woman. BIS is by far the darkest piece in Jan Martens’ oeuvre: intensive minimalism peels off more and more layers, arriving at nothing more (or less) than the essence.
In LA BETE, the young talented actress Joke Emmers surrenders to a sung ritual. Immersed in an inner monologue, she wrestles her way through a song: she deconstructs it, tastes it, spits it back out. LA BETE is a rhythmic performance in which voice, text and movement are connected with one another: a ritual that gradually leads to an (anti-)climax.
